Exploring the use of repellents in eliminating groundhogs from under sheds or porches
Most of you will associate the name “groundhog” with the 1993 comedy movie starring Bill Murray called Groundhog Day. Or if you happen to know this creature by its other name, woodchuck, you may associate it with that mother of all tongue twisters: how much wood can a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck chuck some wood. In any case, the groundhog is a popular animal not only in America, but all over the world, and rightly so.
What is a groundhog?
With their iconic dual incisors, brown fur and small bushy tail, groundhogs are easily recognizable. They are found throughout central and eastern America, as well as in parts of Alaska and Canada. They also happen to have the distinction of being the largest members of the squirrel family and can build amazingly complex burrows. They have (wrongly) long been regarded as weather prognosticators, which is what gave rise to the celebration of Groundhog Day in the first place. However fascinating they may be, they do tend to annoy us by getting under our sheds and porches. Most people rely on repellents to get rid of other pestiferous creatures like skunks and opossums. Does the same apply for groundhogs? Are there any other methods that can be employed?
Why do groundhogs end up under sheds and porches?
As natural diggers, groundhogs love nothing more than digging burrows. The spaces under your porch or shed are favorite places for burrow digging because of the shelter that they provide, and they are generally warm, comfortable places which make all manner of rodents feel secure.
Repellents: good or bad?
Repellents are ideal solutions since they are humane, and work like a charm as well. A popular woodchuck repellent is predator urine. Like skunks, groundhogs can be repulsed and forced to leave immediately once they are exposed to the urine of coyotes, dogs, foxes or bobcats. Samples of these can be found in various stores, and sprayed around your porch or shed to compel the residing woodchucks to pack up their bags. Other scent-based granular repellents available in the market can also be considered. However, other methods can be considered as well.
Invest in good fences
The best way to prevent a groundhog from getting under your shed, or to compel it to abandon it, is to surround it with strong, groundhog-proof fencing completely. It must ideally go 18 inches underground, with the bottom part curving outward to prevent any other groundhogs from entering the area.
Devise clever traps
You can get creative and come up with ingenious traps that allow you to capture groundhogs and transport them to a place far away from your home. For instance, you could set up your fencing in such a way that there is only one way in and out from under your shed, and at this opening, you could place a container or cage which closes shut the moment the demented rodent enters it.
